Chapter 6
Jamie went straight to D’s house after school on Tuesday. Things had been pretty strained between them since Saturday night. They hadn’t argued anymore, but every time Shawna looked at her brother, she could see the anger and disapproval in his eyes.
It hadn’t helped matters when a package had arrived from Rafe on Monday. Flowers for her, more of the gorgeous orchids with the spicy fragrance that he’d brought her the first time he’d come to the apartment. There was also a DVD on whales for Jamie, with a little note about watching it together next time he was over so they could be prepared when they went up to Point Reyes in the fall.
In the fall. Rafe wrote it as if the idea of them not being together then hadn’t even occurred to him.
Jamie glared at her meaningfully for the rest of the day.
Thankfully, Mario had stayed away the last three days.
Rafe had wanted to call her Monday night, but she’d claimed exhaustion. It hadn’t been a lie, her day at work had been long, but the fatigue was more emotional than physical.
When her brother had left for school Tuesday morning, he paused in the apartment door.
“Have a good time with Rafe tonight.” He managed to imbue the words with meaning, making them say so much more than they seemed. Jamie wanted her to confide in Rafe, to ask for his help, to lean on him.
Shawna bit her lip. She wished she could. She wished it were as easy as Jamie seemed to think. It wasn’t, and she couldn’t agree with him. But she managed a small smile.
“Don’t give D’s parents any trouble.”
He shook his head and closed the door behind himself without another word.
Despite, or maybe because of, the tension, Shawna was really looking forward to her date with Rafe.
An entire night to themselves.
He hadn’t told her what he had planned. Not even a hint, aside from the suggestion that she wear her favorite dress. He suggested the black one she’d worn on their first date, mentioning how much he’d enjoyed taking it off her.
The reminder had kept Shawna’s blood on a low boil for the entire time she was at work. She’d been so distracted; even Lenny had noticed and told her to get her head out of her ass. Luckily for her, Carmen wasn’t scheduled that day, or she’d have been interrogated until the pushy brunette knew every last detail of what was going on.
After work, Shawna decided to splurge a little and made a side trip to Cut Loose, the boutique she occasionally picked up hours at. The place was empty when she entered, except for Tanya, who flipped through a magazine near the back.
Tanya was in her thirties, with deep copper skin and lovely hazel eyes. Her black hair was straight as a pin and fell to her waist. She had an effortless sense of style that Shawna had always appreciated.
“Shawna!” Tanya closed the magazine as soon as she saw Shawna walk in the door.
